You can use accessories like flash or reflectors to play with the light available. To get pleasing results, you can use diffused lights or reflectors from more than one point in front of your model. If you are not mindful of your lighting and in control, you won't get the best results from your photo shoot.
Don't fiddle with your camera during the shoot: You need to focus on your model and not only on your camera during the shoot. The more attention you will pay to your model, the better your photographs will be. Giving more attention and time to your camera and playing with the settings during the shoot can lead to failure. You should know the settings of your camera for the desired style of photos. If you are engaged with your camera, you won't engage enough with your model, your model will find it more difficult to relax and pose (unless they are truly professional).
